Vintage airplane cake

This was a surprise cake for Andrew in the office for his birthday.

Inside of the cake was soft and fluffy vanilla sponge filled with vanilla bean buttercream and covered with sugarpaste.

I decorated the cake with sugar paste clouds and stars, topped with a hand-made gum paste vintage airplane.

An airplane cake was quite appropriate for someone in travel industry I thought, plus it matched the theme of the party he planned for the weekend!

I also made matching cupcakes with little airplanes, clouds and stars – vanilla sponge topped with Mandalina Bakery’s signature cream cheese icing, so yummy and light!
